Maria Frucci received her doctoral degree “cum laude” in Physics from the University “Federico II” of Naples, Italy, in 1983. From 1984 to 1987, she worked at the Centre for Informatics and Industrial Automation Research, Portici, Naples, Italy, before as research fellow (1984-1985) and then, as a senior researcher. Mainly, she was active in the area of Natural Language, Expert Systems, and Shape Analysis. From 1988 to 2014, she worked as researcher at the Institute of Cybernetics “E. Caianiello” (ICIB) of the National Research Council of Italy, Naples. Since 2003 she is a Senior Researcher. In 2014, she moved to the Institute for High-Performance Computing and Networking (ICAR), Naples Branch, of the National Research Council of Italy, Naples. From 1999 to 2005, she has been lecturer for the Computer Science degree course of the University “Federico II” of Naples, teaching algorithms and data structures. From 2008 to 2012, she was a member of the Governing Board of the Italian Group of Italian Researchers in Pattern Recognition (GIRPR). M. Frucci has been involved as Chair in the organization of international conferences and as Guest Editor of Special Issues. She has been a Steering Committee and Program Committee member for many international conferences. She has published about 120 papers on different topics in the fields of Natural Language, Perception, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, and Machine Learning. Her main interests are Digital Topology and Geometry, Distance Transformation and Applications, Representation Systems, Color Image Processing, Shape Decomposition and Description, Fingerprints Analysis, Multiresolution, Segmentation, and Classification. In recent years, he has been working on Biometrics and Medical Imaging research topics.
